# Find, share, and export

Search inside a conversation, compact a long thread, share a website a bot is running, share a single run as a page, and export a conversation as Markdown.

Canonical page: https://themachine.myapps.ai/docs/desktop/chat/find-share-export

## Find in a conversation

### Open Find

Press **Ctrl+F** (**⌘F** on Mac), or click the magnifying glass in the chat
header. A **Find in this conversation** box appears.
### Type what you're looking for

The box shows how many matches there are, like **2 of 5**, or **No results**.
### Move between matches

| Key | Goes to |
|---|---|
| **Enter** or **↓** | Next match |
| **Shift+Enter** or **↑** | Previous match |

The chat jumps to each match and highlights the message. Folded steps open
by themselves if the match is inside one.
### Close

Press **Esc** or click **×**.

Find searches the messages and the bot's actions in the chat you're in. To
search **every** bot, group chat, and message, press **Ctrl+K** (**⌘K**) for
the [command palette](/docs/desktop/shortcuts/command-palette).

## The Export menu

Click the **Export conversation** icon (share icon) in the chat header. It has
three parts: **Thread**, **Share**, and **Export conversation**.

## Compact a long thread

Long threads get slow and expensive, because the AI re-reads the whole
conversation every time you send a message. **Compacting** has the bot write
a short summary of the older part of the conversation, and work from that
instead.

**When to compact:** when the usage chip in the chat header turns amber or
red, and you want to keep going in the same thread (for example, because of
the files on its computer).

1. Make sure the bot isn't working.
2. Open the **Export conversation** menu.
3. Click **Compact this thread**. It shows **Compacting…**, then
   **Compacted**.

You keep the same thread, files, and computer, and your whole conversation
stays on screen. The bot keeps the gist of what happened, but may forget small
details from early on. If something important was said early, remind it.

A **Thread compacted** step appears in the chat. Click it to read the summary
the bot now works from. (It's one of the bot's tool steps, so it's hidden if
you've turned tool calls off or use Simple mode.) A bot can also compact a
very long thread by itself, and the same step shows when it does.

**Compact or new thread?** If the next task is unrelated, a [new
thread](/docs/desktop/bots/threads-and-folders) is better. If it builds on
this one, compact.

## Share a website

When a bot runs a website on its computer, for example while building one,
you can share it with anyone, even people without Machine.

1. Open the **Export conversation** menu.
2. Under **Share**, click **Share the site on localhost:3000** (the number
may be different). There's one for each website the bot ran in this
   thread.
3. A public link is created and copied. Paste it wherever you like.

Existing links are listed underneath, with a button to copy each one again,
and a trash button to **turn the link off**.

If the bot hasn't run a website yet, you'll see *"Nothing to share yet"*.

> **Share or deploy?**
> A shared link shows the website only **while it's running on the bot's
> computer**, which makes it good for quick feedback. If the site stops, for
> example after the computer goes to sleep, the link won't show it until the bot
> starts it again. To put a site online for good, with its own address, [deploy
> it](/docs/desktop/deployments).

## Share one run as a page

To show someone how a bot did one particular job, share just that run.

![The line under a finished reply, with Replay and Share](/images/docs/desktop/run-footer.webp)

1. Find the line under the bot's reply, like *Worked 2m 10s · 6 steps*. It
appears under the bot's latest reply when the turn did some work.
2. Click **Share**.
3. Save the web page it makes: an `.html` file named after the bot, like
   `scout-replay.html`.

The page shows what you asked, each step the bot took (with the screenshots it
saw), and its answer. It's a single file: send it by email or chat, and anyone
can open it in a browser, no account or link needed. It only includes what the
bot showed in the chat.

**Replay**, next to Share, opens the bot's computer so you can watch the steps
in the [Live view](/docs/desktop/live/live-view).

## Export a conversation

Under **Export conversation**:

- **Copy as Markdown** copies the whole conversation, ready to paste into a
document, wiki, or email. You'll see **Copied to clipboard!**.
- **Download as .md** saves it as a file named after the thread and the date.

The export includes:

- every message, with who wrote it and when,
- the actions the bot took,
- the names of attachments,
- questions the bot asked.

Markdown is a simple text format that most notes apps, wikis, and editors can
open, including Notion, Obsidian, and GitHub.
